Aloe gilbertii Sebsebe et Brandham (1992)
DESCRIPTION: Usually caulescent, branching from base to form dense clumps, stem ca 1-1,5 m high. Leaves in crowded rosette 40-60x9-11 cm, dark green, margins with brown tipped teeth 3-5 mm long 10-14 mm apart. Inflorescence up to 1,2 m with 12-15 branches, the lower ones re-branched. Racemes cylindrical, 6-15 cm long, laxly flowered. Pedicel 1 cm long, perianth 22-27 mm long. Flowers orange to red. Subsp. megalacanthoides is little bigger plant (looks like A. megalacantha), leaves recurved, epidermis rough. Flowers of subsp. megalacanthoides are bigger (perianth 28 mm) and distribution is in vicinity of Konso.
DISTRIBUTION: Ethiopia (from Butajira, Shashemene to Jinka and Turmi. In area between Jinka-Turmi-Arba Minch grows ssp. megalacanthoides. In vicinity of Sodo-Awassa grows ssp. gilbertii.
CULTIVATION: Not common in culture. Very easy to grow.
